The Suzuki method in Australia
Suzuki is a method of teaching that was developed in Japan for teaching young children to play the violin. The reason why it is so popular for young children is that it is a teaching system based repetition and not reading notes. In Japan, the Suzuki method is very successful due to music reading skills being taught in all of their primary schools.
In Australian schools, music is not taught in every school so it makes it difficult for students who want to learn violin through the Suzuki method but want to complete Australian Music Examinations Board exams. Students that have only been taught Suzuki, but have not been taught how to read music find it very difficult to transfer to the AMEB system when they want to go for examinations.
At Shine Music School, we like to use a combination of Suzuki and the note reading process. Drawing on our experience, we use the rhythmic elements of Suzuki to allow students to establish good rhythm and timing whilst slowly teaching students how to read notes. This develops students to be very motivated and confident of their note reading and performance ability allowing them to excel at exams and play wider repertoire.
Music examinations are a good tool for students who want to continually improve
their playing and performance ability and to have their playing ability graded on
a recurring basis. Music examinations allow students to grade their performance
ability every six months ( certain instruments ), provides goals for students to
aim for and provides a professional grading system for students. Shine Music School
encourages exams but are not enforced on students. Our primary aim is for students
to have fun exploring their chosen instrument.
Students are only encouraged to attempt examinations when they have attained a certain
level of competence and ability. At Shine Music School, all our teachers are Australian
Music Examinations Board ( AMEB ) , Contemporary Popular Music ( CPM) and Associated
Board of the Royal School of Music ( ABRSM UK) registered and we cater for Jazz,
Rock, Pop and Classical exams for all instruments.
